From Overwhelmed to Empowered: How to find the right Mental Health Resource for you

When life feels heavy, knowing you need support is one thing, knowing where to start is another. With so many therapy types, apps, and hotlines out there, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed before you even make the first call. Finding the right mental health resource doesn’t have to be intimidating. With a little guidance, you can move from stressed to supported in a way that works best for you.

The first step is getting clear on your needs.

Do you want to process emotions with a professional? → Look into individual therapy.

Do you want connection with others who “get it”? → A support group may be ideal.

Do you need quick coping skills for stress or anxiety? → Try grounding techniques (scroll to see this month’s ‘Let’s Get Anchored!) or short-term counseling.

Your needs can and will change over time. That’s normal.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the different types of therapy that are available:

  • Therapy (in-person or virtual): Licensed professionals who can provide long-term, individualized care.

  • Support groups: Peer-led or professionally facilitated gatherings where you can share experiences in a safe, understanding space.

  • Grounding Technique: Grounding is a practice that helps bring your mind back to the present moment. It’s especially useful when stress, anxiety, or overwhelming thoughts start to take over. By engaging your senses, you can reconnect with your body and surroundings.

  • Hotlines & text lines/Digital Tools: Free, confidential, and available 24/7 when you need immediate support. Meditation apps, therapy platforms, journaling apps can help fill the gaps between sessions.

You don’t have to commit to the “perfect” resource right away. Sometimes it takes trying a few different avenues to find the right fit and that’s okay. What matters is that you’ve taken the first step toward caring for your mental health.

You deserve support that feels empowering. With so many resources available today, the right one is out there. Or you may find it beneficial to create a mental toolkit. By mixing formal (therapy sessions) and informal supports (journaling app), you give yourself more ways to care for your mind.
