January Wellness Tips

January is like that new planner you just bought, a fresh clean slate ready to be filled with adventures and opportunities. But January can also be so… well January. It’s long, cold, dark and sometimes just straight up no fun. Here’s ways to fight the seasonal blues and to start 2025 off strong.

First let’s talk about New Year’s resolutions. You probably made them and statistics say that by this time in January, you’ve already quit. Which is fine except quitting can evoke a range of emotions including guilt, shame and a sense of failure. Please know you didn’t fail-you just didn’t set the best goals for yourself. In December’s blog we shared our best tips for creating New Year’s resolutions. We are only19 days into 365-there’s plenty of time to get it right.

Not to quote ole’ Frank but the weather outside is frightful. The lack of sun can cause Seasonal affective disorder. Although sun can be a hard thing to find this time of year when it comes out, try and make the most of it. Act like a flower and raise your face to it. Don’t worry about feeling or looking weird, we are all yearning for it. Maybe it’ll give them the confidence to do it too. Research has shown that sunlight can affect the molecules that help maintain normal serotonin levels, the “feel good” hormone. If the weather and your schedule does not comply, talk to your doctor about Vitamin D or light therapy.

If you find yourself feeling anxious, stressed or overwhelmed, try using one of our grounding techniques otherwise known as our segment  “Let’s Get Grounded”. This month we use the “Spell It Out” method. Pick a word like your name, your dog’s name, the brand of your shoe-whatever any word and spell it out with items surrounding you. For example, “wall”. ‘W’ wallet, ‘a’ anchor (we have a ton of those in the office), ‘l’ lamp, ‘l’ leg. Doing this gives you a moment to look around, take some breaths and get back into the now.

Lastly, one of our favorite methods is to find someone to talk to. Having someone to discuss how you feel and issues in your life can help you feel less alone. If you have someone to discuss your problems, they can help you find solutions. Here at Anchor Counseling, we know starting therapy can be hard which is why we offer different options for our services. We can help you in one of our offices, online or even with a dog or horse. We are here to listen and get you feeling better.
