Mid-Year Mental Health Check-in

As the calendar flips into the second half of the year, many of us are thinking the same thing: “How is it already July?”

The excitement of New Year’s resolutions has faded. Summer schedules are busy. Work deadlines continue, kids are home from school, vacations come and go, and before we know it, we’re already closer to the holidays than we are to January.

While we often pause mid-year to review budgets, business goals, or fitness progress, we rarely stop to ask one of the most important questions: How is my mental health?

Take this time for reflection, not judgement. It’s a great opportunity to reconnect with yourself and find out what you need moving forward.

Ask yourself these questions the next time you have a quiet moment.

  • How have I been feeling emotionally lately?

  • Am I constantly overwhelmed, or do I have moments of peace?

  • Have I been making time for things that bring me joy?

  • How have I been sleeping?

  • Have I been taking care of my physical health?

  • When was the last time I laughed?

  • Do I feel connected to the people around me?

  • What has been weighing on my mind?

  • What am I proud of accomplishing this year?

There are no right or wrong answers. The goal is just to become aware of where you are today. It may be easy to focus on everything you haven’t done yet but refocus this time to celebrate your accomplishments.

You can do this by asking questions like:

  • What challenges have I made it through?

  • What have I learned about myself?

  • How have I grown?

  • What am I doing today that I couldn’t do six months ago?

You can also take this time to celebrate the tiny joys. Our brains have a natural tendency to notice the negative. It is called the negativity bias. Thousands of years ago, paying attention to danger helped humans survive. Today, however, that same instinct can leave us focused on traffic, deadlines, bills, and everything going wrong.

The result? We can make it through an entire day without recognizing all the little moments that actually went right. That’s where celebrating simple joys comes in.

Maybe your coffee was especially good, you got a text from a friend, you found exactly what you needed at the grocery store, you made it outside for five minutes of fresh air.

One of the biggest misconceptions about goals is that if we’re “off track” by July, we’ve somehow failed. But in actuality, every day offers a new opportunity to begin again. You don’t need to wait until Monday, next month and definitely not January 1. Take little steps towards your goal while trying to spend more time noticing the little joys.

And remember, your mental health isn’t a resolution you either succeed or fail at. It’s an ongoing relationship with yourself. It deserves regular attention, compassion, and care.

Here’s to checking in, slowing down when needed, celebrating how far you’ve come, and moving into the rest of the year feeling a little more grounded, hopeful, and celebrating tiny joys.
