Summer Break for Everyone!

Have you heard the classic “you only have 18 Summers”? It does nothing but apply unnecessary stress on parents. Social media can make it seem like every family is spending their days on elaborate vacations, educational outings, and Pinterest-worthy adventures. The truth? Children don't need a perfect summer. They need connection, consistency, and parents who are emotionally present.

While summer can create wonderful family memories, it can also leave parents feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, and stretched thin. Here’s your important reminder, taking care of yourself doesn't have to wait until school starts again. It’s Summer break-for EVERYONE!

Many parents fall into the trap of believing they must spend every moment focusing on their children during the summer months. But constantly pouring from an empty cup often leads to burnout, irritability, and resentment. When parents prioritize their own well-being, they model healthy boundaries, emotional regulation, and self-respect for their children.

Many parents schedule camps, sports, and family activities—but forget to schedule time for themselves. Consider blocking off:

  • 15 minutes to enjoy coffee in silence

  • A morning walk

  • A workout class

  • Reading a chapter of a book

  • Meeting a friend for lunch

  • A therapy appointment

  • An evening hobby

Summer can feel isolating, especially for stay-at-home parents or those working from home with children present. Make sure to include time to connect with other adults as well.

I know what you’re thinking “that’s all fine and dandy-but how?!” It’s okay if the kids have the occasional popsicles for lunch, movie marathons, extra screen time or are just plain bored. In fact, boredom can help build creativity, problem-solving skills, and independence.

Lastly, give yourself permission to not love every moment. You can love your children and still feel overwhelmed. You can be grateful for summer and still crave alone time. You can cherish family memories and still count down the days until school starts. Those feelings can exist together. Parenting is hard work, and summer often magnifies both the joys and challenges.

Because the goal isn't to survive summer perfectly. It is to create a season where everyone, including you, has room to rest, grow, and enjoy the sunshine.

At Anchor Counseling, we believe caring for your mental health is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself and your family. If you're feeling overwhelmed, burned out, or struggling to find balance this summer, we're here to help.
